Population: 11, 180,500, 73% of which are
urban population and 27% are rural population. The population
density is 95 people per square kilometer.
Religions: mainly Catholics.
Official Language: Spanish (English is generally used in
business circles and international contacts.)
Districts Dividing: The whole nation is
divided into 14 provinces and 1 special zone.
Currency: peso, the official exchange rate
is 1 peso = 1 dollar
Climate: Semitropical weather. The average
temperature of year is 25.5C, the highest of which is 35C.
Their rainfalls are all above 1000mm, except some certain
areas. The national annual rainfall average is 1400mm. From
May to September is the rainy season and the rest months
belong to dry season.
Geographic locality: Cuba is located at the entrance of
the Gulf of Mexico, in the Caribbean Sea. It limits to the
North with Florida Peninsula (United States of America),
180 Km off its coasts; to the South -140 Km- with Jamaica;
to the East -77 Km- with Haiti; and to the West -210 Km-
with the Yucatan Península (Mexico). It's renowned as the
"golden key to the Mexico of the Gulf", for its
shape roughly like an alligator, it's also called "green
alligator of Caribbean Sea".
Political Situation: Cuban constitution named Cuba as "the
first socialist country in Latin America" with proletarian
dictatorship. In October of 1991 Cuba Communist Party carried
out its fourth national assembly conference and reaffirmed
their persistence in the socialist way. Diplomatically,
they pay much attention to their relationship with Latin
American countries, striving for the re-entry to the great
family of America. In economy they carried out a struggle
for survival, trying their best to develop the food production.
Education, Science, Culture and Physical
Education: Cuban government's accomplishments in developing
education, science, culture, sanitation, physical education,
etc. in these 30 years have attracted worldwide attention.
In average, they get a doctor in every 5 people, a college
student in every 15,a technician in every 8 workers and
1050 scientists and engineers in every million population.
By 1991, the state has got 159 scientific research centers
as a whole.
Important Holidays: Jan 1st is the National Day; May 1st
is the International Labor Day; July 26th is the National
Insurrection Day; December 2nd is the Army Day.
Tourist Spots: Varadero
Transportation: Highway is a main
means of transportation. The highways in Cuba have a whole
length of 490 thousand kilometers and the central highroad,
which is 1144km long, traverses the whole Cuba Island. Cuba
has 17 national airlines and 19 international airlines,
which lead to Europe and America. The Jose Marti Airport,
Santiago Airport, Varadero Airport and Camaguey Airport
are the largest four airports of the states.
